How the Color System Works

Automakers follow a broadly consistent color convention for dashboard warning lights, even though the exact symbols vary by make and model. Understanding the color hierarchy is the fastest way to gauge urgency at a glance.

  • Red lights signal a condition requiring immediate action — stop driving or pull over safely as soon as possible. Examples: oil pressure, engine temperature, brake system failure.
  • Amber or yellow lights indicate a fault that needs attention soon but does not necessarily require stopping immediately. Examples: check engine, TPMS, traction control fault.
  • Green or blue lights confirm that a system is active and operating normally. Examples: high-beam indicator, cruise control engaged, turn signal.

The Warning Lights You're Most Likely to See

Check Engine (Amber Engine Symbol)

One of the most misunderstood lights on the road. A solid amber check engine light means the engine control module has detected an emissions- or performance-related fault. It warrants prompt inspection — not a roadside emergency, but not something to ignore for weeks. A flashing check engine light, however, indicates an active engine misfire that can damage the catalytic converter; reduce speed and seek service promptly.

A Scan Tool Tells You More Than the Symbol

When the check engine light comes on, the symbol alone doesn't identify which system triggered it. Oil Pressure (Red Oil Can Symbol)

This is among the most serious lights a driver can encounter. Low oil pressure means engine components may be running without adequate lubrication. If this light appears while driving, pull over safely, shut off the engine, and do not restart until a qualified mechanic diagnoses the cause. Continuing to drive can cause severe, permanent engine damage within minutes.

TPMS (Amber Tire-and-Exclamation Symbol)

A steady TPMS light means one or more tires are significantly underinflated. Inflate to the pressure listed on the driver's door jamb sticker — not the maximum stamped on the tire sidewall. Battery / Charging System (Red Battery Symbol)

This signals that the vehicle's charging system isn't maintaining proper voltage. Causes include a failing alternator, a deteriorating battery, or a broken drive belt. If it illuminates while driving, minimize electrical load and head to a shop promptly — the car may lose power within miles if the alternator has failed.

Engine Temperature (Red Thermometer Symbol)

Check Engine Light (CEL)

Also called the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), this amber light signals that the engine control module has logged a diagnostic fault code. The severity ranges from minor (a loose gas cap) to serious (misfiring cylinders).

TPMS

Tire Pressure Monitoring System — a federally required sensor network in U.S. vehicles since 2008 that alerts drivers when one or more tires fall significantly below their recommended inflation level.

OBD-II

On-Board Diagnostics, second generation — a standardized diagnostic interface required on all U.S. passenger vehicles sold since 1996. A scan tool plugged into this port can read the specific fault codes behind a lit warning light.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)

The technical term for the check engine light. It is triggered when the vehicle's powertrain control module detects a fault that could affect emissions or engine performance.

Battery Voltage Warning

A light — often shaped like a battery — that indicates the charging system is not maintaining adequate voltage. It can point to a failing alternator, a weak battery, or a loose connection.

ESC / Stability Control

Electronic Stability Control — a system that automatically applies individual brakes to help a driver maintain directional control. A flashing ESC light means the system is actively working; a solid light means it may be disabled or faulty.

Modern vehicles include indicators for a range of active-safety and driver-assist systems. Understanding whether a light signals a fault or normal operation helps you respond correctly.

  • ABS (Amber "ABS" Text) — Anti-lock Braking System fault. Standard brakes still function, but the ABS that prevents wheel lockup during hard braking may not activate. Have the system inspected promptly.
  • Airbag / SRS (Amber Figure-and-Circle Symbol) — Supplemental Restraint System fault. Airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may not deploy correctly in a collision. This warrants immediate professional attention.
  • ESC / Stability Control (Car-with-Squiggly-Lines Symbol) — A flashing ESC light means the system is actively correcting a skid — it is working as designed. A solid ESC light typically means the system is manually disabled or has detected a fault.
